Your Ultimate Guide to Cameo Island Weddings: Everything You Need to Know

In this guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know to plan the perfect wedding on Cameo Island.

Cameo Island

Cameo Island is a small, picturesque retreat steeped in fascinating history. Once part of Zakynthos, a powerful earthquake in 1633 reshaped the region, separating the island from the mainland and transforming it into an autonomous haven. Its natural beauty and romantic atmosphere make it a sought-after destination for weddings.

Getting to the Island

Access to Cameo Island requires some planning due to its unique geography. The island is connected to the mainland by a wooden footbridge, it’s important to note that there is no wheelchair access, and the steep steps can be challenging for elderly guests.

Parking is conveniently located near the footbridge entrance, making it easy for guests arriving by taxi. For a more dramatic entrance, a small boat can be arranged to bring you to the island for your ceremony.

Keep in mind that the challenging access also impacts logistics. Large decorations, flowers, and equipment will need to be transported to and from the island by boat.

Private Hire

The island is divided into two main areas:

  • The Cove: Accessible via a set of steps, this is the most iconic and photographed part of the island, adorned with flowing white fabric. During your hire, staff will ensure privacy by redirecting other visitors.

  • The Upper Area: Open to the public at all times, this section offers elevated views out to sea. While visitors can see down to your event, there is no interruption to your day.

Timings

You can book the island for your ceremony during one of two time slots, each lasting two hours:

  • Early Slot: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

  • Later Slot: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Capacity

The cove can accommodate up to 90 guests, though the uneven ground and fixed furniture can limit layout options. For a more comfortable and intimate experience, consider inviting a smaller group.

Facilities

The island has basic facilities, including restrooms, but these are not private and remain available to the public.

There is no sound system on the island, so you’ll need to arrange for live music, speakers, or microphones if needed. Wedding receptions are not permitted on Cameo Island, but nearby venues and restaurants can provide stunning options for your post-ceremony celebrations.

Drinks & Catering

While the island once had a bar and catering services, these are currently not operational. Basic drinks (beer, wine, champagne) can be arranged directly with the Island Manager, though service staff are not provided. For more elaborate catering or cocktail services, external vendors will need to be hired and approved by the Islands Manager.

Decoration

On the day of your wedding, you’ll have access to the island 30 minutes before your scheduled time to decorate. Everything must be removed once your booking ends.

  • Flowers: Local florists are experienced in setting up and dismantling wedding decorations on Cameo Island. You are free to decorate the cove as you wish but do bare in mind the set-up times.

  • Chairs: The cost of private hire includes the classic director’s chairs, but traditional white wedding chairs are available for hire at approximately €5 per chair, depending on your style preference.

Bookings

Bookings can be made directly with the Island Manager. However, hiring a wedding planner or day-of coordinator is highly recommended to manage the logistics and ensure a smooth experience.

Cameo Island is available for hire throughout the summer season, offering flexibility in choosing your wedding date. Whether you plan a year in advance or opt for a more spontaneous celebration, the island’s charm will make your day unforgettable.
